Enabling In-house Buyer Foreign Exchange Experience in Purchase and Post-Transaction Flows

— Overview

As eBay continues to enhance its new Managed Payments platform it needs to be able to offer locally relevant buying experiences to its buyers. This includes the crucial ability to pay in ones local currency.

Dynamic Currency Conversion allows buyers to choose the currency they wish to pay in (their local currency or the listing currency), while also allowing eBay to monetize on the foreign exchange conversion (FX) from the payment currency to the listing currency.

Monetization of Buyer FX will allow Payments to hit the publicly stated goals of $2BN in revenue and $500 in Operating Income.

— Customer Problem

The only current form of Buyer FX that existed was a 1.0 solution offered by Paypal. Our buyers no longer have this option to select a preferred currency when checking out. There are also inconsistent currency rates displayed across the buying funnel from homepage to Checkout and post transaction. By building an in-house buyer FX solution, we can have a consistent buyer currency experience across our entire site, on all platforms, and give our buyers the flexibility to shop in a currency of their choice while hitting our revenue targets.

“How might we build an in-house foreign exchange solution that provides a consistent buyer experience across our entire site, on all platforms, that gives the flexibility of shopping in their currency of choice while hitting our revenue targets?”

— The Solution

Using the established details and summary pages to incorporate necessary FX components = a unified and relatable experience that buyers will effortlessly navigate.

When viewing order details or receiving a post-transaction receipt, people will recognize a familiar pattern across the site. The guiding tenets highlighted throughout the flows will reflect:

  • Contextual: meeting users where they are by providing relevant information that adapts to users needs

  • Informative: simply providing information that is necessary to understand at each point in the flow

  • Human: easily digestible information that facilitates clear and peaceful processing
